Building meaningful relationships

Linda has been a part of the Avivo team for nine years. Her journey began as a Mental Health Support Worker, drawing from her own lived experiences. Her unique insights, along with a toolkit of coping strategies, made her an invaluable asset.

“I absolutely love working with people,” said Linda Bunworth, a Support Worker with Avivo. “I’ll put my hand up for any opportunities that come up. I spent three years as a Team Facilitator, but I realised that it was taking me away from what I enjoy the most – connecting with people, especially during the challenges of COVID.”

Working locally

“When I started with Avivo, I’d travel all over the southeast suburbs of Perth, but since we moved into local teams, I don’t need to travel as much,” added Linda.

With the introduction of neighbourhood teams came the need for Support Workers to diversify into all sectors that Avivo supports – in Linda’s case, she has expanded her expertise to include working with aged care customers and individuals with disabilities. She’s become well-versed in meeting the diverse needs of various people.

“We build meaningful relationships and as Support Workers, we become like part of the family,” enthused Linda.

Linda finds motivation in assisting people to lead rich and fulfilling lives, tailored to their unique circumstances.

“I work with customers on their goals,” Linda added. “For some people, that can simply mean having a shower, getting dressed and feeling good about themselves. For others, it’s about helping them pursue their passions or long-held aspirations.

“In my role, I’m helping people to live a good life and fulfill their potential.”

Linda values the special bonds she forms with her customers. She believes that working with the same customers over an extended period is mutually beneficial, as they get to know each other deeply. In customers with dementia, she’s even able to help rekindle cherished memories for them as their condition progresses.

Celebrating diversity

“Avivo really is a forerunner in the world of diversity,” smiled Linda, who actively participates in Avivo’s diversity initiative, known as the ‘care collaborative’.

Linda assists with events and workshops hosted by the care collaborative, including Pride Parade. She also helps with their social media presence and has formed friendships by putting up her hand for new opportunities.

Looking ahead

Avivo offers traineeships for eligible colleagues to undertake professional development while in their role. Linda was an eager candidate and is studying for her Certificate III in Individual Support. She’s also enrolled in Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which is a path she’d like to move into in the future.

“I see the need for skills and knowledge to be passed on and qualifications acquired in the Community Services sector,” added Linda. “My aspiration is to eventually play a role in training aspiring Support Workers.”
