We know that forming and maintaining strong human connections can positively impact the quality of our lives.
The bond between Support Worker Carol and her customer Athena is proof of this. Their longstanding relationship shows there is strength in finding the right person and, after two decades together, it’s clear this is the right fit!
Carol joined Avivo (then Perth Home Care Services) 20 years ago and from the very beginning, Carol felt she had found her true calling.
“Support Workers become part of the puzzle of a customer’s life,” said Carol, who has worked with Athena for as long as she’s been with Avivo. “There’s a lot of trust involved in letting someone you don’t know into your home and your life. It needs to be the right match. You need to have mutual respect.”
“It’s a two-way street. Personalities either gel or they don’t!” added Athena. “When you have a disability, you have to share your life with someone. Carol and I have been through a lot together.”
“You can’t spend 20 years with someone and not have some great stories and memories together,” said Carol. “We’ve gotten to know each other very well over the years and have been there with each other through many life experiences.”
Shared experiences
Athena’s daily life is supported by many different Support Workers, but Carol remains a constant. They go out together, meeting up with Athena’s friends and indulging in her love for action movies and various outings of Athena’s choice.
Carol and Athena have navigated challenges and celebrated many victories together.
“I managed not to frighten Carol away,” laughed Athena. “Our first memorable outing to Melbourne one year resulted in me falling out of my chair… After being told by my sister to be careful because Melbourne streets are very hilly!”
Beyond their shared activities, Athena has found a new passion in mouth painting. Having been encouraged to give it a try, she has since created some beautiful artwork that adorns her home.
The right attitude
Athena emphasised the importance of attitude and flexibility when it comes to being a good Support Worker.
“It’s about attitude. Experience is secondary,” said Athena. “With the flexibility, along with the Support Workers I have on my team, we’ve got it just right,” she smiled.
