Karlee & Vai – The Support Project

The Support Project is an Avivo initiative aiming bring real human connections to life by shining a light on Support Workers and the incredible work they do in our communities.

In the charming rural town of Wundowie, the relationship between Karlee and Vai shows how genuine connections can have a huge positive impact on the lives of both customer and Support Worker.

Karlee’s career journey started when she undertook a mental health administration traineeship before stepping into the world of support work.

Karlee’s professional experiences have shaped the way she approaches her role and her customers.

“I know how to help customers get the best from their funding packages,” said Karlee. “I like that I can help improve the quality of their life.”

Customer Vai is well-known in the Wundowie community, so it makes sense that she and Karlee knew each other long before working together.

While there was some trepidation on Vai’s side about having a Support Worker she already knew, the duo soon found a rhythm that works for them.

Meet Karlee

Boundaries

It’s not the first time Karlee and Vai have worked together. Vai mentored Karlee in footy umpiring years ago. They shared experiences and friendship before working together through Avivo. These shared memories have created a bond that goes beyond the typical client/Support Worker dynamic, yet they still maintain clear and professional boundaries.

Their relationship thrives on open communication, providing a safe and nurturing space for honest conversations and shared growth.

“We know where our boundaries are and when to draw the line,” said Karlee. “I am comfortable and understand Vai enough to be able to call her out when I need to in a professional capacity, but we maintain a friendship outside of Vai’s supports.”

Their friendship extends to moments of shared grief and support, such as commemorating the anniversary of Vai’s husband’s passing.

Because Karlee knows Vai well, she can easily read her emotions and believes this helps elevate her role as a Support Worker to Vai.

“I can tell what she needs in most given moments,” added Karlee. “And because of our relationship, Vai’s comfortable to be herself with me.”

Karlee and Vai enjoy their time together and recognise the profound impact of social support on Vai’s overall wellbeing.

“Karlee’s a really a lovely person and she’s good at her job,” said Vai. “All her customers adore her. She’s a doer… If Karlee hadn’t been my Support Worker, I really don’t know where I’d be now.”

Meet Vai

Craft group

The creation of their craft group adds another chapter to their story. Fuelled by Vai’s passion for crafts, Karlee encouraged Vai to start her own craft group, bringing joy, creativity, and a sense of community to the people of Wundowie. Everyone is welcomed with open arms.

This shared venture not only uplifts participants, but it also serves as a canvas for the positive impact that Support Workers, like Karlee, can have on the lives of their clients and the broader community.

As the craft group continues to grow, so too does the bond between Karlee and Vai.

“As a Support Worker and customer, we stand alone, but together, we can do so much more,” said Karlee.

“It’s a relationship… Together, we’re a team.”
