Laura’s Inspiring Journey

Laura has been a part of the Avivo family since 2001 (back when we were known as Perth Home Care Services). Throughout the past 22 years, she has witnessed remarkable transformations within Avivo and the aged care sector, yet the unwavering vision and values of Avivo remain constant.

“I absolutely love my work – I love making a difference,” beamed Laura Coleman, Avivo’s dedicated Practice Advisor specialising in Aged Care and Dementia at Avivo.

Her passion shines through.

“At the core of our vision are the people,” Laura affirmed. “Our customers are who matter most, and we do whatever it takes, within our reach, to make a difference to their lives.”

A heartwarming connection

Laura’s connection with people has always been her strength. Her desire to help others has been a lifelong calling, particularly her passion for working with older individuals.

Laura first embarked on her journey with Avivo through the ‘Extended Aged Care at Home’ initiative, and her role has evolved over time. From Avivo’s modest beginnings in a Leederville-based office, it has now blossomed into multiple offices spread across Perth and regional areas.

Reflecting on those early days, Laura admitted that envisioning Avivo’s current size was a challenge, yet this growth was essential to better serve the community’s needs. While her responsibilities have shifted, Laura has found her true calling—working in aged care for three days a week and dedicating the other two days to sharing the enriching ‘SilVR Adventures’ virtual reality (VR) program with customers.

“The VR experience is sensational,” Laura enthused. “Witnessing customers virtually explore the world and observing their reactions is beyond rewarding. I’m privileged to encounter so many incredible individuals.”

Originally designed for older individuals and those living with dementia, our VR program has expanded its horizons to encompass customers of all ages.

“We’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of VR experiences and want to extend this joy to a wider audience,” Laura shared. “It truly is an experience meant for everyone.”

Empowering independence

Laura is also a firm believer in Avivo’s philosophy of empowering individuals to help themselves whenever possible.

“Our goal is to support and empower people to achieve their potential,” Laura explained. “By embracing this approach, we nurture feelings of freedom, dignity, and self-reliance.

“We adopt a person-centred approach. We look behind the everyday tasks to work out how we can make the biggest impact.”

Future plans

As for her future at Avivo, Laura envisions herself continuing her current role and potentially expanding the VR program, if funding allows.

“I find immeasurable joy in making a difference,” Laura mused. “Knowing that you’ve brought a smile to someone’s face is the ultimate reward for a job well done.”
